Analysis of Group #1: Drawing of St. Peter's Church
When Jamal’s group presented, they spoke articulately and confidently about their excerpt and used Jamal’s drawing to enhance their presentation. I think that the class was able to understand the excerpt better because they now had a visual representation of the information. Perhaps more importantly, I think that Jamal’s own learning was significantly improved because he was given the opportunity to use art. In an interview, Jamal stated that he felt like he understood the topic really well because he was able to use art while he was learning.
When Jamal’s group was working, I tried to encourage them to use their strengths and to take advantage of the autonomy that they were given. I also worked with them to prepare their oral presentations by telling them that each student needed to have something to say in order to receive full credit and helping them divide up the work. I found that the entire group was receptive to me helping and wanted to accept my advice to receive a good grade on the project. They were ultimately successful and scored top marks on their presentation. As noted above, I think that Jamal’s drawing was a significant contribution to the project and helped the group, as well as the rest of the students, understand the topic. The fact that Jamal’s group chose to use art to present their project supports the idea that when given autonomy, students will use their strengths and skills to compete an assignment.
